  How long does it take to charge an electric car? 

EV charging time is all dependant on what charging point you use & your vehicle battery size. If your vehicle for example can only charge up to a maximum of 11kW then you will want to look for charging points of up to this size. You can charge at higher kW rated charging points but the vehicle will only allow you to charge up to 11kW.

95% of the time your vehicle is parked up doing nothing, top up charging is whenever you park up you plug your vehicle in & charge. Whether it be at home overnight or during the day at the supermarket, gym or workplace. Instead of letting the battery run empty & waiting while it fully recharges. Top up charging keeps the battery at its maximum capacity meaning your ready to go whenever. Majority of EV owners like to combine daytime top up charging with overnight charging at home. It is an effective way to keep your electric car charged & ready to go. 

Off peak tariff charging? 

Want to make the most of your charging & save money whilst doing it. Charging from home overnight could save you a lot in electricity bills. EV charger’s majority come with features that allow you to set up off peak tariff charging so all you have to do is pull up on your drive, plug in your vehicle & the charger will start once it hits the off-peak time. So, you may want to think about switching to a different electricity tariff so you can benefit from the off-peak charging. You could save £300 a year by switching to a cheap fixed rate energy tariff of £0.14/kWh. With an average annual mileage of 7,400 miles, that works out to around 5,186 ‘free’ electric miles a year. 

Accessing & paying at public charge points 

There are various chargepoint networks in the UK including pod point, chargemaster, Ecotricity, Charge your car & chargeplace Scotland. 
Access to charging is usually through a radio frequency identification (RFID) card or smartphone app, although an increasing number of chargepoints accept contactless credit or debit card payments. 
Charging costs include a standard connection fee, plus the amount of electricity consumed, multiplied by the chargepoints supplier’s or network’s electricity tariff (price per kWh). 
Membership of a charging network may give you access to cheaper rates & could save you money if you use the same network regularly.

You can extend the range of your electric vehicle by adopting ecodriving techniques & working with your vehicle’s features. We recommend that you: 
Anticipate the road ahead to avoid harsh acceleration & braking. 
Watch your speed. 
Consider how you use the heating & air conditioning (for example, pre-heat the car while plugged-in to avoid consuming energy from the battery at the beginning of the journey). 
Understand & using your vehicle's Eco-mode or features. 
Use the Top up charge technique.  
Time your charging right, if you know you leave at a certain time everyday try to line the charging of your vehicle so it completes just before you go to drive the vehicle. By doing this the batteries are warmed up & ready to be used straight away & some claim you get a few more miles out of the vehicle this way.
